𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆; it is a battle over the “𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆” of the 𝟮𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝘆’𝘀 largest European conflict. Vladimir Putin asserts that Russia is not the aggressor but a reactive force, blaming the West for “igniting” a fire that has now raged for nearly four years of full-scale invasion. According to Moscow, the 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 of this conflict dates back to 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟰, a year that both sides view through a completely different historical lens. This matters because the justification for war often rests on which 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 a nation chooses to believe. When two nations cannot agree on why a war started, finding a path to peace becomes a 𝗽𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

𝗦𝗼, 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 “𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗲” 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? Think of history as a 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺. To a population, a shared history provides a sense of safety and identity. In a conflict, 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 uses “𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴” to determine how people perceive events.

𝟭. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗶𝘃𝗼𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁: The 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟰 removal of President 𝗩𝗶𝗸𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗬𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗸𝗼𝘃𝘆𝗰𝗵 is the core disagreement. Putin frames this as a “𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁-𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗽,” an illegal seizure of power that threatened Russian security. Ukraine and the West frame it as the “𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆,” a public uprising against corruption.

𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗽: By framing the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 as a continuation of 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟰, Moscow creates a “𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲” justification. In this psychological model, the invasion is presented not as a start, but as a reaction to 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

𝟯. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲: Putin points to the 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 and the 𝗢𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝘅 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 in Ukraine as evidence of a cultural threat, using these elements to signal that Russia will protect its interests “𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁.”

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 in the duration and intensity of the fighting. Russia has stated that its goals—specifically the “𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗯𝗮𝘀”—must be achieved before the war ends. Data from international monitors show that the 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗯𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻 has been the epicenter of conflict for over a decade, shifting from a localized insurgency in 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟰 to a globalized proxy struggle today. Putin’s insistence on these goals suggests a 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 strategy, relying on the belief that time and 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 will eventually yield a Russian victory.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. The primary 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 of Putin’s narrative for his domestic audience is 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻; it provides a unifying “𝘂𝘀 𝘃𝘀. 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺” framework. However, the 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 is the 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 it causes. Most of the world views the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 as a 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘁𝘆, regardless of the 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟰 context. This clash of definitions—”𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗽” 𝘃𝘀. “𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻”—is the 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗳 the stalemate.

In the future, the way this war is remembered will depend entirely on which side’s 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 survives the test of time. It raises the question: 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁 in a space where both sides believe they are the victims of the other’s “𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻”?

While Putin points to specific laws and events from 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟰, international bodies like the 𝗨𝗡 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝘆 have repeatedly voted to condemn the invasion as an 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. History is not a laboratory experiment with a single result; it is an 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲 for 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Further historical distance and documentation will be needed before the world can definitively reconcile these 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 narratives.
